PREVIOUS WINNERS HEAD JUNE SAFARI ENTRY LIST
The winning crews from the previous two years head the provisional entry list for Saturday's 4 x 4 June Safari, the second round of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) increasingly popular Ruf 'n' Tuf Navigational Championship, sponsored by Barbados Industries Ltd.
At the close of the briefing meeting on Wednesday evening (June 23), the entry stood at 24 crews, this number set to increase before entries close on Friday afternoon. This year’s June Safari will be the 47th running of what was formerly known as the June Rally, which makes it the oldest organised motor sport event in Barbados . . . possibly even in the Caribbean.
The Pro Group entry is headed by last year’s winning crew, husband and wife team Leslie and Annalee Alleyne (AutoZone Inc/Amalie Motor Oil/Quality Tyre Mazda B2500TDi), but they can expect some tough competition as they strive to defend their crown. Ian Warren and Peter Bradshaw, the joint winners of the June Safari the previous year are also entered - driving Isuzu and Land Rover respectively, Warren will have brother Robert navigating, while Bradshaw is teamed with Chris O’Neal.
Other prominent entries include last year's second-placed crew, Biddy Barber and son Brett (Biddy’s Visitors Information Daihatsu Feroza) and championship sponsor Mark Sabga, who will have navigator Peter Wilkie with him in the Billy Boy/Ruf 'n' Tuf/Romaro Uniform Centre Kia Sportage.
Once again, there is a good entry in the Novice Group, which caters for drivers who have not finished in the top 15 prior to championship registration. Neptune Tours is again donating trophies to the highest-placed Novice crew.
Barbados Industries Ltd provides trophies for first, second and third overall, while Biddy Barber has once again donated trophies for the highest-placed female driver and highest placed female navigator: currently, the lone driver listed on the provisional entry is Keri-Dawn Watkins, while navigators are Annalee Alleyne, Kerri Gibbs, Lisa Roett and Biddy herself.
The BRC 4 x 4 June Safari will start at 2.00pm on Saturday (June 26) from Black Bess Quarry in St Peter, finishing at approximately 11.00pm at the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas; the event will consist of two routes, each covering roughly 60 kilometres, with a stop-over between.
Competitors will travel through the parishes of St Peter, St George, St Philip, St Joseph and St Andrew, using a wide variety of navigation systems - tulip, BRC, photography (non-aerial) and herringbone (or straight line.)
