NAVIGATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CONTINUES

Competitors can expect another tough challenge when the Barbados Rally Club's (BRC) 4 x 4 Navigational Championship continues on Saturday, August 27. The third round of this popular championship - the August 4 x 4 Safari - will start and finish at the Vaucluse Raceway (VRW) in St Thomas.
With a demanding route set by three experienced competitors, Sean Gill, Harry Watkins and Kirk Watkins, the event is scheduled for a 2.00pm start, with competitors expected to complete the day back at VRW at around 10.00pm.
BRC navigational sub-committee member Lindsay Farmer reports: "The route setters are keeping a lot of the details very close to their chests but, bearing in mind who they are, we can all expect this to be a real tough test for both driver and navigator.
"What I have managed to squeeze out of them is the following: the vehicle used to set the route was, primarily, a Toyota RAV 4; the types of navigation to be used are BRC, Tulip and - very likely - Straight line as you see it, as well as Straight Line on the map."
More will be revealed at the briefing meeting, which is to be held next Tuesday (August 23) at 7.00pm at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association, Searles, Christ Church. Entry fee for this event will be $40 per vehicle, plus $35 temporary membership for each non-BRC member.
With two of the four rounds remaining, Kevyn Yearwood is leading the Navigators Championship with 32 points, six ahead of Neil Barnard; in the Drivers Championship, joint leaders are Jeremy Croney and Derek Gill, although Croney will be missing the remaining two rounds.
Farmer said: "We would like to wish Jeremy all the best, as he has headed off to England to study. Unfortunately he will not be here for the final two rounds, so the navigational sub-committee wishes him well in his studies, and hope to see him in more safaris in the near future."
Competitors who are new to navigational events, or new to off-roading, are encouraged to visit the web site www.rallynut.com; in the navigational rallying section, which is regularly updated, there are tutorials on the different types of navigation, as well as a couple of practice BRC routes. For drivers, there is a new section to do with 4x4 driving techniques.
The fourth and final round of the 2005 BRC 4 x 4 Navigational Championship is slated for early November.
