BOURNE AND MANNING HEAD ENTRY LIST
Paul Bourne and Trevor Manning will go head to head for the last time this season when the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) stages the Texaco BRC Gravel Rally this Sunday (October 22); the deciding round of both the Texaco BRC Rally Championship and the Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Championship, it will start and finish at the Vaucluse Raceway in St Thomas.
After a 9.00am start, there will be eight special stages – the morning route will comprise four runs through Yorkshire, slated to start at half-hour intervals from 9.30am; after a lunch halt at the Searles Yard Feed Lot, there will be four runs through Guinea, again slated to start at half-hour intervals, from 12.45pm.
The first car should reach the VRW finish at 3.00pm; after results have been declared. a prize-giving is scheduled for 6.00pm.
BRC vice-chairman Barry Gale said: “I had expected around 20 entries and, with six four-wheel-drive cars plus some of our most spectacular two-wheel-drives, I think we should have a fantastic day. The size of the entry should also help the event run smoothly - we are running each venue back to back, so there should be very few delays.
“At one time, we had thought about running a final stage at Vaucluse but, with all the doubt over the stages thanks to the rain, it seemed sensible just to concentrate on reviving our original plan. A great deal of work has been put in over the last few days, and I’d like to thank the landowners for their help.
“It will still be well worth coming to Vaucluse, though; it is our last rally of the season and the prize-giving allows spectators a chance to join competitors, marshals and officials to celebrate the end of another successful season.”
For this final rally of the year, Bourne’s co-driver in the Warrens Motors/Plus Subaru Impreza WRC will be Stuart Maloney, while Manning will have regular co-driver James Betts in the Simpson Motors/Shell Helix/Automotive Art/VISA/Garbage Master Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII.
Bourne leads the Texaco standings with 42 points, Adrian Linton is second on 30 and Manning third on 27. Driving the Ravensden/Crane & Equipment/Garbage Gobbler/West Coast Garden Centre/Edwin Clarke Furniture Vauxhall Astra GSi, 2002 BRC Champion Linton also leads the Virgin Atlantic standings, but his chances of a second title are under threat.
Drivers in the Virgin Atlantic championship score points against their opponents in the various Groups, some of which are undersubscribed on Sunday - three is the minimum number; this looks to have worked in favour of Linton’s closest challenger Ian Warren (Subzero Services/Details Car Valet Inc/McEnearney Quality Collision Repair Centre/Aqua Pur Peugeot 206), whose co-driver is Matthew Staffner.
Although Warren is the lone Modified 6 entry, two Production 2 cars have been merged up to complete his Group; Linton, whose co-driver will be wife Jackie, is one of only two Modified 7 entries, which have been merged up into Modifed Open, where they will face the likes of Jonathan Still (Hitachi Power Tools/Philips Lighting/Warrens Motors/Crane & Equipment/VP Racing BMW M3) and Mark Hamilton (Consolidated Finance/McEnearney Quality Inc Ford Escort MkII).
On Friday, Linton said: “Sunday is going to be very interesting. It looks as though I am going to have to drive with some considerable vigour! And now the rain has started again, anything could happen.”
