BOURNE, LINTON AND WARREN THE BIG WINNERS

More than 70 members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured at the Barbados Rally Club’s Annual Awards ceremony on Friday night (November 17), staged at the St Philip residence of vice-chairman Barry Gale. Among the awardees were stage commanders and marshals, whose voluntary contribution to the sport is of such vital importance.
Paul Bourne and Louis Venezia were crowned Texaco BRC Rally Champions, while Bourne also collected trophies as winner of Modified 9 and fourth overall in the Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Championship. Adrian Linton claimed his second Overall Champion’s title after topping Modified 7 – he won from Production 3 in 2002; he also finished third overall, highest-placed two-wheel-drive car and highest-placed crew including a female competitor (his wife Jackie) in the Texaco Championship.
Others to visit the stage regularly included Ian Warren; he finished third in the Driver’s section of the BRC Safari Championship, collected awards as Modified 6 Champion and second overall in the Virgin series, sixth overall in the Texaco standings and the coveted Richard Roett Memorial Trophy.
Each of the Club’s three stage commanders - Ernest Brewster, Jeff Bovell and David Reece – had been asked to nominate winners from their crews in the most outstanding, most dedicated and rookie marshal categories, then were surprised also to receive trophies and awards themselves. Even more surprised to receive an award was Chief Marshal Roger Sargeant, who had arranged the marshal presentations.
More than 200 attended the occasion, at which Club Chairman Mark Hamilton also announced exciting plans to celebrate the Club’s 50th Anniversary in 2007.
