LAST CHANCE SALOON FOR RALLY CLUB CONTENDERS
Virgin Atlantic Championship to be settled on Sunday The Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Virgin Atlantic Driver’s and Class Championships will be decided on Sunday (October 13) at the double-header BRC Winter Gravel Sprint at the popular Black Bess course in St Peter. Conor Roach and Rhett Watson are tied on 120 points at the top of the table after seven rounds although, once each driver’s lowest score is dropped – 13 and 15 respectively from Scotiabank King of the Hill – Roach edges ahead by just a couple of points. Each has a full compliment of competitors in his class on Sunday, so can score maximum points – in the Clubman category, Roach (Chattel House Realty Peugeot 106) will face Jeremy Croney (Club Warren’s Lubricants/SRG Engineering/Sign Station/Sweet Temptations Peugeot 206), Trevor Mapp (Valvoline Lubricants/Chicken Pen Racing/Mackeson Mitsubishi Mirage RS) and Andrew Skeete (Sweet Temptations/Fasteners Barbados Mitsubishi Lancer). In SuperModified 12, Watson will share the gravel-spec four-door Oreo/Chips Ahoy!/Armstrong Agencies/Power King Batteries/Unknown Entity/Hankook Tyres/SpringBoard Marketing Platforms/In support of Little Pink Gift BMW M3 with Sean Corbin, while Allan Maynard will also run in the class (Marshal Trading/Roberts Manufacturing/Lubriguard Lubricants Toyota Starlet). The only other driver within striking distance of these two is Geoff Noel (Kick Energy Drink/Sentry Insurance Brokers/Automotive Art/CIAC Air Conditioners/Mix 96.9FM/Dewalt Tools Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX), who is three points behind Watson once dropped scores are taken into account; on Sunday, however, he only has Harold Morley (Ontrac Vehicle Tracking/Booth Steamship/Crowley Shipping Subaru Impreza N14) to compete against in Group N, so will be scoring reduced points, which will hamper his chances of closing in on them. BRC Competition Secretary Neil Corbin and a group of volunteers started course preparation work last Sunday, after which he said: “The course is still being finalised, but we are looking to possibly include a new section on the grass field adjacent to the long gravel hill (on the right when heading East). We will be running up the hill, therefore heading to the East, in the first sprint, then coming down the hill in the second”. Competitors are expected to arrive at Black Bess by 7.30am, with the event slated to start at 9.00am. Service will be in the usual area on the approach to Mangrove Plantation, on the grass and under the trees. There will be a drive-through of the course before the first practice run, although competitors who arrive late have been warned that they may not be able to participate.
