RADICAL ROUTE RETHINK FOR SOL RALLY BARBADOS 2020

Procter wins in UK, with island connections on podiums

The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) has confirmed a radical rethink of all former conventions in planning the route for the delayed Sol Rally Barbados 2020, changes made possible in part by the continuing effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Highlights of the two-day event will include the longest special stage in recent memory, a move away from the tradition of Saturday stages in the north of the island and Sunday’s in the south-east and a journey through all but one of the island’s parishes.

MudDogs return to action Sunday

Barbados Rally Club (BRC) stalwart Biddy Barber returns to competition after a long break this weekend, when she lines up for the Chefette Summer Safari. Having competed many a time in navigational events with son Brett, Sunday (September 20) will see her first outing in the Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship with her 12-year-old grandson Austin.

Three decades on from claiming the first overseas result in the Barbados Rally Club’s International All-Stage Rally – he finished ninth in 1991 in a Volkswagen Golf GTI – Britain’s Howard Paterson is pulling out all the stops to make sure he can compete in Sol Rally Barbados 2020. Against the background of uncertainties created by Covid-19, the well-travelled Paterson says that “Barbados is the only place I would consider shipping my car out to and doing an event.”

Maloney sets record, Walcott scores well as Bushy Park returns

A new Radical SR3 Qualifying Record set by Zane Maloney and good haul of points for Reigning Champion Andre Walcott in Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc’s (BPMSI) Group 1, the best-subscribed class of the day, were among the highlights of Sunday’s (August 30) VP Fuel Sales & Rock Hard Cement Race Meet. With the 1.28-kilometre National Circuit in use and Covid-19 safety protocols in place, a good turn-out of fans in the Clubhouse enjoyed an ideal vantage point with the entire lap in clear view.

Zane Maloney joins circuit racing return at Bushy Park

Fresh from claiming the best result so far in his EuroFormula Open campaign in Europe –second at Circuit Paul Ricard in France last weekend - reigning British F4 Champion Zane Maloney will compete at Bushy Park on Sunday (August 30) as circuit racing restarts in the island.

Small margins split winners in Overall, 2wd and R5 battles

Closed-road motor sport’s return delivered all it promised, as the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) and Motoring Club of Barbados Inc (MCBI) joined forces to organise Sunday’s (August 23) HammerTime 20. Swapping times back and forth, Jamaican Jeff Panton and Britain’s Rob Swann shared the overall honours, Josh Read and Barry Mayers claimed a 2wd win apiece, while Roger Hill and Trinidad & Tobago’s David Coelho each topped the growing FIA R5 class, with rarely more than split-seconds deciding the winners.

Panton and Swann give Ford Fiestas WRCs island debut

Sol Rally Barbados 2019 winner Dane Skeete celebrates the return to closed-road motor sport this weekend as number one seed for Sunday’s (August 23) HammerTime 20 at Cherry Grove in St John, jointly organized by the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) and Motoring Club of Barbados Inc (MCBI). The running order published today (Friday) reveals an entry of 28 cars, with nine in the four-wheel-drive classes the highest total in the island outside the Rally Barbados weekends since 2013.

Overseas rally drivers, starved of competition since the coronavirus pandemic brought motor sport worldwide to a grinding halt in March, are pulling out all the stops to make the return to closed road events in Barbados a weekend to remember. The non-championship Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Test Stage on Saturday (August 22) will be followed on Sunday by the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc’s (MCBI) ‘Hammer Time 20’.
