Near-record entry for Williams Industries International

Reigning Champions Mark Maloney and Mark Thompson lead Team Barbados in to battle at Bushy Park this weekend (September 2/3) in round three of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC). With Barry and Roger Mayers – current CMRC lap-record holder and former CMRC Champion respectively – also ready for action, and a near-record entry for the Williams Industries International Race Meet, motor racing fans are being urged not to miss out.

  The statistics speak for themselves: 113 entries are shown on the list published today (Thursday) by Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI) – only the second time in the venue’s history that more than 110 have been listed for one event – while more than 13 hours of track activity is promised over the two days, with 25 races offering 192 laps of non-stop action on Sunday alone.

  While BPMSI will welcome more than 20 racers from around the region and North America, local fans are also eagerly anticipating the return of Steve King to the four-wheel-drive ranks in a new Nissan Skyline fresh from the workshop, reigning SR3 Cup Champion Suleman ‘Sol’ Esuf’s first races outside the Suzuki Challenge Series in his ex-Jerry Leach Group 3 Honda Civic and the circuit racing debut of Sol Rally Barbados fan favourite Shon ‘The Flickster’ Cummins.

  BPMSI Chairman Sean Maloney said: “The way this race meet has come together is a credit to everyone involved, and I would urge fans not to miss it. The Bushy Park Pits will be open on Friday evening from 4pm to 8pm so local fans get a chance to mix with our international visitors, then Saturday Practice & Qualifying is free.

  “This has been a fantastic team effort, with everyone showing great commitment: thanks again to our title sponsor Williams Industries and the enthusiasm that ‘Bizzy’ Williams himself brings to everything they do, to our individual race sponsors, and particularly to the competitors, who have not only entered in their numbers, but also supported our promos at the JAD Dyno, Kermitt’s Bar and Sky Mall. I know it all takes time, especially when you are working to prepare your car or bike, so a huge thanks! Also to the fans who have already turned out – bring your friends at the weekend!”

  Three races each for the CMRC categories on two and four wheels are the feature events of the programme, which also includes round three of the Suzuki Challenge Series SR3 Cup and Swift Cup and round four of BPMSI’s own Club Championship; the day will end with the traditional Hilti Handicap races for cars and bikes.

  Two six-lap Rally Car Challenge races have attracted more than 20 entries, with new names being added to the list almost daily this week: Sammy Cumberbatch and Justin Campbell will go head to head in their BMW M3s, while Geoff Ullyett has also expressed an interest in driving the family M3, campaigned in Sol RB17 by brother Chris. Other fancied front-runners include the Honda Civics of Jamal Brathwaite, Daryl Clarke, Jermin Pope and Kurt Thompson – all have previous circuit racing experience – and former Bushy Park Champion Edward Corbin in his Daihatsu Charmant. The grid for the first race will be based on Saturday Qualifying, while the second race will run to a Handicap format.

  Chairman of the Caribbean Motor Racing Association (CMRA) Silbourne Clarke was full of praise ahead of the weekend: “BPMSI is to be congratulated, in these financially-challenging times, on retaining their title sponsor Williams Industries, along with Digicel, and to yet still bring on other sponsors. Bushy Park circuit holds many, many fond memories for those of us that have had the privilege to race here and, for some like myself from the inception of the track in 1971, the opportunity to make life-long friendships while taking part in the sport we all love.”
