Barbados Rally Club returns to Stewarts Hill

Motor sport fans can expect an action-packed afternoon of motor sport on Sunday, October 28, when the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) returns to the iconic Stewarts Hill speed event course for the first time in six years. With a full-on spectator experience planned in conjunction with the title sponsor, the double-header final rounds of the inaugural Flow SuperSprint Series will make St Philip the day’s first-choice destination.

The Overall Champion in this new-for-2018 stand-alone competition, plus the top front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive crews will win a 48-inch TV courtesy of Flow, with each class-winner also collecting a trophy. The results will be based on the cumulative total of each driver’s best time from Flow KotH in May, added to his best time in each direction on October 28. The BRC expects competition to be tight, as drivers will be also chasing points in the Club’s Annual Driver’s and Class Championships, which will conclude with the BRC Winter Rally on November 23/24.

The BRC has carried out extensive groundworks to prepare the spectator areas, while Flow is co-ordinating the spectator experience, with a DJ, music and event commentary. BRC Chairman Mark Hamilton said: “The Club has been working hard to significantly improve the spectator environment at the bottom of the Stewarts Hill straight, as well as on the brow overlooking this area. Access to parking and viewing areas will be available via the road coming from either Skeete’s Bay or Bath, which will facilitate both entry and exit while the event is ongoing. However, we would urge fans to be in place by 12.00pm to guarantee the best viewing positions.”

While Stewarts Hill has been used for both drag racing and cycling events in recent years, next week’s event marks the BRC’s first use of the venue since the Sunday of Sol Rally Barbados 2012; it was also the second home of King of the Hill in 2009, following the inaugural Turner’s Hall event in St Andrew. The Service Park for the day will be the nearby Windward Cricket Club, where washroom and bar facilities will be open. The event is scheduled to start at 1.00pm, with four timed runs in each direction, first from Mapps to Stewarts Hill, then the reverse; the Club expects the event to be completed by 5.00pm, after which there will be a Prize-giving on the Flow Stage overlooking the Stewarts Hill straight, to which all are invited.

A third straight victory at Flow KotH for Jamaica’s Jeffrey Panton places him top of the Overall Leader Board in the Rubis/Sandals Barbados/KIG Ford Focus WRC06, while Dane Skeete (Sol/Automotive Art Peugeot 306 Maxi) is comfortably ahead in Fwd. Barry Mayers (Chefette/Rubis/Digicel/Hankook/DHL/Illusion Graphics Ford Fiesta) leads the Rwd contenders, but by the narrow margin of 1.02secs from Andrew Jones (Lucozade/Caribbean Powder Coating/Southern Surf Beach Apartments/AP Jones Pharmacy Ford Escort MkII).
Entries opened at Motorsport Services last week and close next Wednesday (October 24), with a late-entry facility available for a further 24 hours, after which the Running Order will be published.
