Maloney aiming to build Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup lead
Early points leader Mark Maloney will be looking to increase his advantage in the 2019 Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup when round two runs off at Bushy Park Barbados on Bank Holiday Monday (June 10). With two race wins and a second place from the opening round in April, Maloney starts the day 20 points clear of the chasing pack, with three 15-lap races on the schedule.
Things are finely-poised just behind Maloney, however. Just three points cover second, third and fourth places, with double Jamaican Modified Production 2 Champion William Myers on 48 points, followed by Maloney’s two brothers Stuart (47pts) and Sean (45pts). Having never raced on the 2.01-kilometre Bushy Park International Circuit before, 21-year-old Myers was the revelation of the opening round, claiming three podium finishes, two thirds and one second place.
Reigning regional Champion Stuart won April’s middle race, his 18th SR3 Cup victory, and returns to circuit racing on a high, having finished as highest-placed two-wheel-drive car in last weekend’s Sol Rally Barbados, when he debuted his Rock Hard Cement/Sign Station-backed Citroen C2, with Mark’s son Justin as co-driver. Fourth-placed Sean dominated the early days of SR3 Cup racing at Bushy Park, winning the Summer Series, Winter Cup and the Overall title in 2015/16, so some robust competition is anticipated on Monday.
All eyes will be on Trinidad & Tobago’s Kristian Boodoosingh, who picked up only six points in the opening race in April, after a rare component failure – his ECU lost power, the first instance of that happening since the SR3 Cup was launched in Barbados, and there was no spare. ‘Boodoostig’, who has won two of his 10 SR3 Cup races, will be keen to fight back on Monday and claw his way up the standings from seventh.
His fellow-countryman Luke Bhola lies fifth, three top six finishes in April including a fourth place, equalling his best SR3 Cup result to date, while this year’s second newcomer from Jamaica, Horatio Brown, lies sixth after a confident car-racing debut.
The SR3 Cup races are joined on the scheduled by three races for Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc’s regular classes and sessions for Track Day cars. Entry for patrons ($5 per person, under 12s Free) will be through the Pit Gate from 10.00am and refreshments will be on sale in the Pit Cafeteria. The first BPMSI race is scheduled for 12.40pm, followed immediately by the opening SR3 Cup encounter at 1.05pm.
BPCI was appointed sole distributor for Radical Sportscars in the Caribbean in 2017; based in the East Midlands city of Peterborough, the British manufacturer has built more than 2,000 cars, progressing from the iconic Clubsport model revealed in early 1996 and which established the company’s reputation, to the SR8, which brought Le Mans Prototype pace to the UK national racing scene.
Running to the same rules that have applied to the SR3 Cup in Barbados since 2015, this is again a one-make series for the Suzuki-powered Radical SR3, so does not cater for the Radicals of different specifications that are now racing in the region in the hands of drivers such as Kyle Gregg and David Summerbell Jnr; all cars will be scrutineered before each qualifying round to ensure compliance.
