Jeffrey and Guyana lead Radical Caribbean Cup

Kristian Jeffrey of Guyana is the early leader of the 2022 Radical Caribbean Cup (RCC) after winning twice in the opening round at Bushy Park Barbados yesterday (July 10). Chief Instructor at the St Philip facility Justin Campbell was the other race winner, while Trinidad & Tobago’s Kristian Boodoosingh claimed three podium finishes in the tightest start yet for the regional series.

  With the fastest lap bonus point from race one and a fourth-place finish in race two, Jeffrey leads the standings with 63 points, 15 ahead of Boodoosingh, with Campbell third just one further point adrift. In the Nations Cup, Guyana has 65 points, seven more than Barbados, with T&T third on 51 and Jamaica fourth with 24, represented by Senna Summerbell, who finished only two races.
  Nearly two years since its last Race Meet in August 2020, Bushy Park resounded to the welcome sound of the Suzuki-powered Radicals in Free Practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday morning before the serious business of Qualifying. With nearly 50 laps under his belt, Jeffrey had been steadily improving, claiming pole position with a time of 58.826s, just three-hundredths quicker than 2018 RCC Champion Stuart Maloney and four-tenths ahead Mark Maloney.
  Fresh from setting a new outright lap record at the Dover Raceway back home in Jamaica, newcomer Summerbell and ‘Boodoostig’ were even more closely matched than Jeffrey and Maloney on the front row, separated by just three-thousandths and with less than six-tenths the spread across the top five. The two Justins, in the order Campbell and Maloney, completed the grid.
  With races starting from the southern grid, Jeffrey and Stuart Maloney fought hard in race one, although the positions remained the same, the Guyanese driver heading the former Champion home by half-a-second after 10 laps, gaining the bonus point for fastest lap. Mark Maloney ran third until he retired at half-distance after the oil pressure sensor tripped and put the engine in ‘safe’ mode, when Boodoosingh assumed the final podium place, having passed Summerbell on the opening lap.
  Justins Maloney and Campbell sat on the front row of the reversed grid for the second race, Boodoosingh and Summerbell on row two, Stuart and Mark Maloney on row three, with Jeffrey at the back. The winner by 8secs, Mark Maloney was judged to have jumped the start and handed a 10secs penalty, dropping him to sixth. Campbell then won by nearly two-tenths, the largest margin of the day, Stuart Maloney setting the fastest lap on the way to second place, with Boodoosingh again finishing third.
  Based on points scored in the first two races, Jeffrey and Stuart Maloney were on the front row for the day’s final encounter – there was just one point between them at this juncture. Campbell and Boodoosingh sat on row two, Summerbell and Justin Maloney on row three, with Mark Maloney at the back. Contact between Summerbell and Stuart Maloney at The Dipper on lap one resulted in instant retirement for both, also disqualification for the Jamaican for causing the collision. Pressured hard by Boodoosingh, Jeffrey claimed his second win of the day, with Mark Maloney completing the podium and adding another fastest lap to bring his record to 24 since the Suzuki Challenge Series first introduced the Radicals to the region in 2015.
