Huge crowds attend final Sol RB19 shakedown at Stewart’s Hill

Jamaica’s Jeff Panton and Mike Fennell re-wrote the record books again yesterday (Sunday) with their fourth straight victory in Flow King of the Hill, the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) annual Sol Rally Barbados shakedown. Having trailed England’s Rob Swann for the first three runs, Panton made the final run count, to win by a margin of 12 hundredths of a second in the Rubis/Sandals Barbados/KIG Ford Focus WRC06.

A record entry of 95 crews will contest Sunday’s (May 26) Flow King of the Hill, the final shakedown ahead of Sol Rally Barbados 2019 (May 31 to June 2), the 30th running of the Barbados Rally Club’s premier event. A classic showdown between local, regional and international drivers is on the cards, to be played out in front of huge crowds as the event makes a popular return to Stewart’s Hill, an iconic venue in island motor sport.

Encouraging upturn in island competitor numbers

Local drivers chasing points in the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) 2019 Driver’s and Class Championships are heading in to the most important two weekends of the year. As Flow King of the Hill (May 26) and Sol Rally Barbados (May 31 - June 2) draw ever nearer, on-line ‘countdowns’ are fraying the nerves of mechanics across the island, while drivers are gearing themselves up to face with the largest local entry in recent years.

WOMEN IN MOTOR SPORT IN SOL RALLY BARBADOS

Record-equalling 22 female participants from seven countries

Four newcomers to rallying in the Caribbean are among the record-equalling 22 female participants in Sol Rally Barbados 2019, the 30th running of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) premier event. While England’s Cheryl Spencer is this year’s only driver, the list of co-drivers includes first-time visitors Jane Nicol and Nikki Addison, who both won titles in last year’s 50th Anniversary Scottish Rally Championship (SRC).

Panton heads near-record 100-strong entry

The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) is targetting the 30th running of its premier event very firmly at the island’s huge spectator base, a key component in the sport’s growth in recent years. As the provisional entry list of 100 crews – the most since Sol RB12 – was confirmed at today’s (Wednesday) Media Briefing at Mahogany Ridge, St James, the organising team made clear that this year’s event is “one for the fans”.
