Challenges open to spectators at Vaucluse on Sunday

Following the successful implementation of a face-lifted format for its first event of the season last month, the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship continues this weekend (Sunday, April 16). The MudDogs April Safari will start in St John and there will once again be three spectator-friendly Challenges at the Vaucluse Raceway (VRW) in St Thomas, where the event will also finish.
Thirteen crews are listed on the running order published after last night’s (Tuesday) Briefing Meeting, including reigning Champion Driver and Navigator Leslie Alleyne and Chris O’Neal (Pod Store/Maxxis Suzuki Jimny), who were the route-setters for the year’s first Safari last month. MudDogs Chairman Ricky Holder said: “I am pleased to see the return of some of the new competitors we welcomed at the March Safari as well as a few more new names. Hopefully, this trend will continue as the season progresses.”
The Super-S MudDogs March Safari was notable for the first overall victory for a crew from Class B since the classification for less experienced competitors was introduced in 2018. Stephen Moore and son Ben won the day in their Isuzu D-Max and return to do battle again in Sunday’s event with a fairly even split between Classes A and B. The Class B entry includes another father and son crew, Robert and Tye Warren (Suzuki Samurai), who came second in class to the Moores last month, and Tyrone Chase and Sameisha Williams (Suzuki Vitara), who won a paid entry and insurance for this event from Alleyne and O’Neal as a Route Setters Encouragement Award in March.
Route-setters for the second Safari of the season are Wayne Clarke, six-time winning Navigator of the June Rally, and David Reece, who has been navigating for Stephen Mayers in recent seasons. The Challenges are set by Brett Barber.
Sunday’s event will start at 8.00am in the Colleton Plantation Yard in St John from where crews will head west through the central parishes to VRW, where the first two Challenges will take place at around 11.00am. After a brief rest stop, crews will restart at 12.30pm for the second route before returning to VRW for the day’s third Challenge and event finish at around 5.00pm.
The results of the BRC MudDogs April Safari will be declared at the Prizegiving which starts at 7.00pm next Tuesday evening (April 18) at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association (BCTSA) Club House at Searles, Christ Church.
