Radical Caribbean double-header for T&T fans at Wallerfield

Circuit racing fans in Trinidad & Tobago are in for a rare treat next month, when the Radical Caribbean Cup stages its first-ever double-header for the Suzuki-powered Radical SR3 sports-racers at the Frankie Boodram Wallerfield International Raceway. Catering for the fastest race cars in the region, the five-round series administered from Bushy Park is currently being led by T&T hotshot Kristian Boodoosingh, who finished runner-up last year.
  Round two in this fourth season of the regional series was scheduled to be run at Wallerfield next weekend (June 24/25) by the Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association (TTASA). Supply chain issues and complications with shipping, however, have caused delays with the decision now made to expand the confirmed date for round three (July 22/23) into a double-header, with six races to be run over two days. Full details of the event, which will also include TTASA’s regular categories on two and four wheels, will be revealed nearer the time.
  Championship co-ordinator Kurt Seabra said: “I must thank our colleagues in TTASA for working with us to resolve this issue. With an already packed motor sport calendar at Wallerfield, it was important for us to try and avoid any inconvenience to the many other disciplines and the double-header solution certainly fits the bill.”
  Last year, when the regional series visited Wallerfield for the first time since June 2018, Barbadian Zane Maloney won twice and set new Qualifying and Race Lap Records. Having just completed his FIA Formula 3 campaign, in which he finished second, and appearing as a non-scoring guest driver, the teenager’s presence helped boost the grid to a record 13 cars.
  With the other race victory and two second places behind Maloney, Boodoosingh gave his home crowd and principal sponsors much to celebrate, collecting maximum championship points to assume the lead of the regional series. While he went on to finish second at year-end to Guyana’s Kristian Jeffrey, he has started 2023 on a high, winning twice in the opening round at Bushy Park Barbados (May 14).
  While Mark Maloney of Barbados was the other race-winner, two podium finishes plus two fastest lap bonus points place Jamaican teenager Tommi Gore second in the standings on his debut in the series. With the fastest lap bonus point from race one and a fifth-place finish in race two, ‘Boodoostig’ leads the standings with 61 points, 15 ahead of Gore, with Justin Maloney, the only Barbadian to finish all three races, third with 32 points. In the Nations Cup, Trinidad & Tobago has 68 points, a 13-point lead over Barbados, with Jamaica third on 51.
  Since the first-ever RCC races were run at Wallerfield in June 2018, there have only been three Champions, as two seasons were lost to the coronavirus pandemic: Stuart Maloney of Barbados and Jamaica’s William Myers won in 2018 and 2019, with Guyana’s Jeffery beating Boodoosingh to the title in 2022 by the smallest winning margin so far, just five points. Last year’s inaugural Nations Cup was even closer-fought, Guyana beating Barbados by a single point.
