Momentum shifts in BKA Championship standings

Zak Mayers has increased his advantage in the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship following a thrilling day of wheel-to-wheel racing at Bushy Park Barbados on Sunday (April 7). The Crane & Equipment Raceday was free from major incidents or penalties, producing five different race-winners, with another five drivers claiming podium places, and a shuffle in the standings as the momentum shifted in two of the BKA’s three classes.

Mayers shared the race wins two apiece in the Easykart 100cc Juniors class with his cousin Jacob, increasing his points total to 255; it is now a Mayers one-two at the top of the overall and class standings, Jacob (216pts) moving ahead of Aeden Bruce (209pts). Having scored a second 100-point maximum for a clean sweep of four wins in the Easykart 125cc Lights class, Calem Maloney has regained the class lead from Kayleigh Catwell (195pts), these two now fourth and fifth overall, with new Easykart 60cc Cadets class leader Shamir Eversley (194pts) sixth.

While Jacob Mayers was fastest in practice, cousin Zak qualified on pole for the first Juniors race, which he led from flag to flag, his 6secs winning margin the day’s largest in this close-fought class. On his first full day in the category, former Cadets racer Oliver Judd finished second after an early battle with Aeden Bruce and Jacob.

Zak led for more than half of race two before Jacob found a way past, heading his cousin home by 1.2secs, with Bruce third, while Zak got the upper hand early in race three, the closest of the day, Jacob and Bruce within a quarter of a second at the finish. Race four looked set to give him a third win, but Jacob passed him two laps from home, Judd claiming his second podium of the day.

As in March, there were close battles in the 125cc Lights, although this time for the places, as Maloney won all four races, with Raizer Stoute having his best meet of the season, second every time. Maloney led the opener throughout, with Sebastien Thompson beating Kayleigh Catwell in a race-long battle for third.

Aaron Blackett led the reverse grid race two early on, Maloney moving ahead on lap five, while Thompson claimed a second podium after Catwell retired. Maloney led the final two races throughout, Stoute in an early second-place battle with Thompson in race three, while Catwell claimed her one podium finish of the day, third in race four, to hold on to second in the class standings.

With Judd’s move up to the Juniors, Shamir Eversley is now the leader of the Easykart 60cc Cadets standings, despite winning only one of the four races against his new rival Jordyn Hinkson.
