Last chance for MudDogs to score this Saturday

Leslie Alleyne and Chris O’Neal have won three of the season’s four MudDogs Safaris in their Suzuki Jimny

Crews competing in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship are making ready for the fifth and final round of this year’s competition, Saturday’s (November 9) Savvy on the Bay November Safari. Recent rains promise a challenging final test for the Club’s off-road 4x4 navigational fraternity.
Ten crews are listed on the running order published after last evening’s (Tuesday) Briefing Meeting at the Carlisle Bay, Bridgetown, premises of event sponsor Savvy on the Bay. MudDogs Chairman Ricky Holder, who was also one of the route-setters for the season finale, said: “I think we’ll have some good competition on Sunday, as teams grab their last chance to score points.
“There are no Driver Challenges, but if the rain continues, it looks like the whole event will be challenging. My thanks to Allan Kinch and Savvy on the Bay for the sponsorship, also for hosting our Briefing Meetings and Prizegivings this season.”
Current leaders of the overall driver and navigator standings are Simon Parravicino and Andrew Croney, who have been a front-running crew all year in their Jeep Wrangler; third in May, second in April and June, then winners in September, they have 232 points, but are not entered at the weekend as they will be out of the island. George Mendes lies second in the driver’s table with 208, while Ben Moore is closer to Croney in the navigator standings, on 220.
A rare non-finish in the September event dropped multiple champion driver Leslie Alleyne, winner of the season’s first three rounds, to fourth place . . . but once the dropped score rule is applied, he rises to the top again by a narrow margin, as the leading contenders shuffle places. Alleyne’s regular partner Chris O’Neal lies fourth in the navigator standings, as he missed the September event completely, but again benefits from the dropped score rule, climbing to first.
With increased entry numbers this year, Class B continues to be hard-fought, with all the main players in action for a final time on Saturday. The Suzuki Vitara crew of George Mendes and Leslie Evanson are leading the class driver and navigator standings respectively with 234 points from three wins in four events.
Thanks to winning the class in this year’s Chefette June Safari, Charles Clarke is second in the driver standings, with his sister Rebecca third; in the navigator standings, Charles and Rebecca’s mother Robyn is second, with Rebecca’s navigator Nynoka King third. Again, the dropped score rule shuffles the pack.
Route-setters for the season’s final Safari are Holder, John Pinto and Mike Ward. The first crew will set out at 2.01pm on Saturday from Country View Bar, Market Hill, St George returning to the same venue at around 6.00pm after “meandering through the centre of the island heading north-east”, as Holder describes it. After the dinner halt, crews will head south-east, then east, on a longer route which will finish at Savvy on the Bay at approximately midnight.
Crews will return to Savvy on the Bay at 7.00pm next Tuesday (November 12) for the declaration of results of the November MudDogs Safari and the Prizegiving.
