BMF, BADD back regional drag racing championship

Drag racing will have a ground-breaking new regional championship in 2025

The Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) and the Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD) are partners in a ground-breaking initiative which will pit the island’s best drag racers against their peers from Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. The Caribbean Drag Racing Championship (CDRC) will kick off this Sunday (February 16) at Bushy Park Barbados and in Guyana.
Spearheaded by the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC), the championship is a joint initiative in collaboration with the BMF, BADD, the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMRSC) and the Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association (TTASA). It is officially registered with the FIA’s National Calendar platform and will feature 16 events across the participating nations.
The CDRC is a closed competition, with racers invited by their National Sporting Authority (NSA) to represent their country at no cost of entry to them. Racers will earn points by competing in three of their locally staged national events, with the top 16 competitors in each class across all participating countries invited to battle for supremacy at the Championship Final in Jamaica in January 2026.
Key stakeholders in regional motorsport and the wider FIA community have expressed their support. Daniel Coen, FIA Vice President for Sport - North America, said: “It is great to see motorsport evolving in the Caribbean. The effort by the JMMC and ASNs to create this championship is commendable and I fully support it.”
David Williams, Vice President - Sport for the BMF, added: “The Barbados Motoring Federation is proud to be part of the CDRC and looks forward to its success. Thank you to Jamaica for this great initiative.” BADD President Robert Bishop agreed: “BADD is excited to be part of this initiative. The CDRC is a fantastic step forward for drag racing both locally and regionally.”
There will be two competitive classes: Pro Street (10.999 to 10.000 seconds) and Pro Race (9.999 to 9.000 seconds). Qualifying events will run concurrently with regular national drag racing events during the year before the Final in Jamaica in January 2026, where the winners will receive trophies and prize money, with additional winnings awarded to the champion’s ASN.
Stephen Gunter, Chairman of the JMMC said: “I am thrilled to celebrate the launch of the CDRC. This initiative showcases the dedication and passion of our motorsport community and strengthens regional collaboration. We are confident that this championship will set a new standard for drag racing in the Caribbean and provide an exciting spectacle for fans and racers alike. Let the races begin.”

Editor’s note: the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) is the island’s governing body for motor sport, affiliated to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). It also represents the interests of its Member Clubs in discussions with Government departments which facilitate the sport in the island, in particular the Ministry of Transport, which permits road closures for an agreed number of events each year. Away from motor sport, the BMF affiliate which answers the FIA Mobility remit is the Barbados Automobile Association (BAA).
