Barbados Rally Club charity drive for Challenor children
The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) has presented the Challenor Creative Arts & Training Centre in St. Thomas with a cheque for $10,000. The funds were raised at the nearby Vaucluse Raceway, when some of the island's top rally drivers offered motor sport fans passenger rides round the three-kilometre track.
At the Challenor School, Deputy Executive Director, Ms Michelle Perry received the cheque from BRC Treasurer Beverley Roett; the funds will be used to assist in the purchase of a lift. Also on hand were Greg Cozier, representing the Friends of Motorsport, and some of the school's pupils.
Afterwards, Beverley Roett said: "We raised a total of $7,267.00 through a combination of the circuit rides and takings at the bar; the Club decided to make up the difference to bring the total to $10,000.00."
The club's drivers who freely provided their cars to drive the fans around were: Neil Barnard, Paul Bourne, Barry Gale, Brian Gill, Mikey Hassell, Roger Hill, Trevor Manning, Roger Marshall, Roger Mayers, Nathan Naime, Geoff Noel, Cliff Roett, Richard Roett, Roger Skeete, Ian Warren and Kirk Watkins.
Mrs Roett added: "A day like this takes some organising. As well as the drivers, the BRC would like to thank the Friends of Motorsport for the use of the Vaucluse Raceway and MixFM for promoting the event; also Canada House, Carters General Stores, Corbin's Garage and Roett's Garage for sponsoring the newspaper adverts which brought so many people to Vaucluse, and HFCB for help with administration and printing.
"On the day, there was invaluable help from Ellco Rentals and Island Care Ambulance Service, plus Tracy Catlyn, his team of marshals, Tricia Gillmore and Susan Mayers in the ticket booths and club president John Sealy, who had also arranged the insurance. Last, but not least, the Barbados Rally club would like to thank all our fans for supporting us in helping this very worthy cause."
