SAFARI SUCCESS PROMISES PRIZES

Successful competitors in this weekend’s Barbados Rally Club (BRC) June Safari will be well-rewarded, following the donation of prizes by a number of local businesses keen to support the island’s longest-running motor sport event; this will be the 46th running of the event since its inception in 1957, when it was known as the June Rally.
Thirty-four entries were registered at Wednesday’s briefing meeting for the two-part event, which will start at the ITC building in Warrens on Saturday (June 28) at 1.00pm; defending co-champions, Peter Bradshaw and Derek Gill, head the Pro Group entry in their Land Rover Series II, while the Novice Group entry includes Barry Mayers, fresh from his Group victory on Rally Barbados.
Brothers Ian and Robert Warren, with whom Bradshaw and Gill tied for victory last year, are not entered again, as Ian is now pursuing his rally career in the UK; Robert’s influence will still be felt, however, as he set the first of the two routes to be tackled by competitors.
Trophies will be awarded to the top three crews overall, the highest-placed Female Team and the highest-placed Novice Group crew; in addition, there will be trophies for the winners of Route 1 and Route 2 in each of the Novice Group and Pro Group.
The prizes donated include a Gift Voucher from the SOMA store in Sheraton (donated by Sophie Warren for the highest-placed female team), dinner for two on the Harbour Master (donated by Tall Ships), two $50 Gift Vouchers (donated by Carters General Stores), four passes to Olympus Theatres, four passes to Club Xtreme and six gallons of Lubriguard Oil (donated by KG Enterprises).
Joint organiser Lindsay Farmer, who set the second of Saturday’s routes, said: “We are looking forward to the event and would like to thank those businesses who have supported the June Safari; we are also very pleased to see more newcomers joining our events and hope that we can continue to grow this grass roots element of the sport, in which important navigational skills are developed.”
Entries in the Pro Group also include Reggie Gill, returning to competition after damaging his wrist in a BRC Tarmac Rally earlier this year, Sean Gill, who swaps his Group-winning Suzuki Ignis for an Isuzu Pickup, and Stephen and Roger Mayers, who won the BRC’s Navigational Test in March.
The first route covers approximately 50 kilometres and uses Tulip navigation to carry the competitors through various gullies and tracks on their way to the dinner stop at The Cove Restaurant in Cattlewash, with the first crew due to arrive at around 5.00pm. The second route uses Tulip and BRC navigation systems, and will take competitors over another 60 kilometres in the north of the island, ending at Harbour Lights on Bay Street approximately four hours later.
