MUD DOGS RETURN TO BATTLE FOR RFS SAFARI
After a three-month break since the June Safari, competitors in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Mud Dogs Safari Championship rejoin battle this Sunday (September 13) in the Regional Fire & Security September Safari. Round three of the four-round championship is slated to start at 8:01am from Automotive Art, Welches . . . and it will start in fine style, too, with a driver challenge on the adjacent land.
The morning route will cover the western and northern parishes, before the stop-over at AXIS Inc, The Garden, St James at around 12:30pm. In the afternoon, crews will take in the island’s central and eastern parishes, then finish at the Barbados Clay Target Shooting Association’s (BCTSA) Clubhouse at Searles at approximately 5:00pm.
The event will be split roughly 60/40 between the tulip system of navigation and map work, which is also divided between the traditional BRC method and a re-generated straight-line by the map system. Route-setters for the first time are Sean Dowding and Kirk Watkins, while the tulip sections are being checked by Stewart Gill.
Competition is expected to be tough, with fewer than 10 points spread across the leading crews. Dominic Brooker and Stephen Dear (SDRR Hydraulics/Next Generation Electrical/Joe Brooker's Building Toyota Hilux), who started their season well with victory in the ARMAG March Safari, currently head the Driver and Navigator standings.
Their closest challengers are Darrin White and Robert Warren (Flyin’ Fish/Lucky Locks Nissan Frontier); third in the season-opener, they went on to win the Shelbury Construction June Safari, to lie just two points behind the leaders.
Champion Navigator and Driver in 2005, Neil Barnard and Barry Gale (Gale’s Agro Products/Redlinefuels.com Mitsubishi L200) are currently third; Gale is overseas on BRC business, however, so navigator Barnard will sit alongside his father, David, whose wealth of experience – and results, three-time winner of ‘The June’ – will make them a very strong team. Chris Armstrong and Wayne Clarke (Toyota Hilux) are just a handful of points adrift, so another good result will keep them in contention.
The Prizegiving for the Regional Fire & Security September Safari will be held at 7.00pm at the Barbados BCTSA Club House on Tuesday, September 15, once the results have been declared final.
