RALLY CLUB CELEBRATES SEASON’S END

More than 70 members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured on Friday evening (November 20) at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prize-giving; the awards included 14 return tickets to the UK, presented by Rachel Pilgrim, marketing manager of Virgin Atlantic, title sponsor of the BRC Driver’s and Class Championships.
Among the evening’s awardees were marshals, whose voluntary contribution to the sport was lauded in addresses by Club Chairman Mark Hamilton and Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne. The contribution of long-standing marshals Paul Bourne, Michael Broomes, David Carter and Lynne Croney was acknowledged with trophies donated by Marshall Trading, while another eight volunteers were rewarded in outstanding and rookie marshal categories.
Paul Bourne and Stuart Maloney were crowned Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Champions, while Geoff Noel and Kreigg Yearwood collected the awards as Overall Class Champions. In the Mud Dogs Safari Championship, Robert Warren claimed the Sextant Challenge Trophy as Champion Navigator, Darrin White collected the Peter Farmer Memorial Trophy as Champion Driver, while the Mud Dogs MudFest Champion was Tfphill Juman.
Included in the Prizegiving for the first time was recognition of the increasingly popular grass roots discipline of Autocross, which has been attracting newcomers to motor sport – John Marshal was rewarded as highest points-scorer in the four events.
More than 300 competitors, marshals, media and their families attended the occasion, which was held at Balls Plantation, Christ Church; the evening’s entertainment also included a showing of the Sol Rally Barbados 2009 programme filmed by British production house Acceleration TV, which is being broadcast 20 times to more than 16 million homes in 40 countries across Europe on satellite station Motors TV throughout November.
