RALLY CLUB CONFIRMS LIST OF 2016 CHAMPIONS

Annual Prizegiving set for January

Following the conclusion of the competition season last month, just before the island’s 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations moved into high gear, the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) today confirms its list of Champions for 2016, along with the leading points-scorers across all disciplines. With such a busy calendar during Independence and the Festive Season, the Annual Prizegiving will be held in January 2017, moved from its customary November date.

As had already been confirmed last month, Daryl Clarke is the Champion Driver for 2016, while Roger Hill and Josh Read are respectively 4wd and 2wd Champions. Leslie Alleyne and Chris O’Neal are the Chefette MudDogs Safari Champion Driver and Navigator for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year, with Richard Hinkson and Kevin-Jon Manning the Novice Champions, while Jamaica’s Chris McFarlane has won back-to-back BRC Autocross Championships.

Driving the Roberts Manufacturing/Amir’s Chicken/Valvoline/MQI Collision Repair Honda Civic, Clarke was also Modified 2 Champion, his third class win in five years, losing the coveted Champion Driver title to a tie-break on each previous occasion. SuperModified 1 Champion Edward Corbin – his sixth BRC class title since 2003 - finished second in the Automotive Art/Pro Sales/KlarkOdio/Hilti Daihatsu Charmant, while early leader Read (Sprite/Stihl/Gliptone/Hankook/Weetabix/Chutney’s/Urban Kitchen/Cell Hut/Cockspur Toyota Starlet) slipped to third. The SM2 and 2wd crowns, however, combine with Read’s seven earlier class titles to archive an unrivalled record of success over the 10 seasons since he was Champion Driver and SM9 winner in 2007.

Neil Corbin (Nassco/Jason Jones/Auto Solutions/Emtage Electric/BG Products & Services/Valvoline Toyota Starlet) finished fourth, winning M1, while sixth-placed Rhett Watson (SM3 Chefette/Carter’s Pitstop/Stihl/Gliptone/GUNK/The Unknown Entity in support of Little Pink Gift BMW M3) claimed his third consecutive class win. Veterans John Corbin (Valvoline/Pro Sales Toyota Corolla) and Trevor Mapp (JSB Motorsport/A S Autostop/Chicken Pen Racing/Valvoline Mitsubishi Colt Mivec RS) finished seventh and ninth overall, respectively winning Historic 2 and Clubman 1.

The remaining class Champions finished outside the overall top 10: WRC – Roger Hill (Esso/Nassco/MotorMac/Pennzoil Toyota Corolla WRC): Group A - Avinash Chatrani (Lenovo/PowerBass/Gunk/iShop/Electric Avenue/Copocabana/Unlabeled Society Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI); GpN - Andrew Mallalieu (Terra Caribbean Subaru Impreza N10); C2 - Allan Kinch (Jolly Roger/Boom Energy Drink/Pirate’s Cove/Cran Plus Water BMW 318ti); GpB - Calvin Briggs (Lucas Oil/Massy Realty Ford Sierra).

Campaigning the Simpson Motors/Shell Spirax/Shell Rimula/Maxxis Isuzu D-Max, Alleyne and O’Neal’s fourth consecutive MudDogs title is a record since the BRC’s off-road navigational championship was created in 2004, and one unlikely to be broken any time soon. Michael Ward and Warrick Eastmond (Regional Fire & Security/Quality Tyre Suzuki Jimny) finished second, after winning a tie-break – it is based on the lower total of penalties in common events - with last year’s runners-up, Ben Norris and Kirk Watkins (Birdies Restaurant Ford Ranger). Having finished second last year, Richard Hinkson and Kevin-Jon Manning (Goodyear Tyres Suzuki Samurai) have won the Novice Championship, the only crew to have contested the entire 2016 season.

There were back-to-back titles in the BRC Autocross Championship as well, for Jamaica’s Chris McFarlane in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Although he won all four rounds, he was pushed hard by Jamal Brathwaite (Honda Civic Type-R) in round three, then only overcame a strong challenge from Stuart Garcia (Subaru Impreza STI) in the last run of the final round last month.
