Thompson leads BKA points as class battles heat up

Nine drivers won races in a hugely competitive fourth round of the 2023 Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship at Bushy Park Barbados on Sunday (August 13). While Blake Thompson increased his lead in the Champion Driver title chase, the battle has intensified in both the Cadets and Easykarts Lights, where single-figure points margins now separate the front runners.

Cousins Zak and Jacob Mayers, who were absent from the 60cc Cadet class last month, returned to the fray in determined mood. Jacob was the fastest qualifier, but Zak won the opening race, by just 0.3secs, then two more as the cousins battled for supremacy, Jacob winning race three, by the day’s smallest margin of 0.1sec. Points leader Aeden Bruce was third in all four races, but his class lead has been cut from 29 points to just five by Zak, with Jacob also much closer in third place.

Reigning Champion Driver Calem Maloney, another absent last month, returned to the 125cc Easykart Lights class, topping Qualifying and claiming flag-to-flag wins in three of the four races. Race two was a cracker, as Sebastian Thompson and Maloney swapped the lead, Thompson ahead at the flag by just two-tenths of a second. Finishing third twice and second once, Colin Bradshaw held on to his lead in the standings, although his advantage has been reduced to six points by Maloney.

Blake Thompson, who had become the third different championship leader in as many rounds last month, was also now the first to keep his lead, the top three in the overall standings currently the top three in the 100cc Easykart Juniors. Fastest in Qualifying, Thompson led race one throughout, Raizer Stoute just two-tenths behind at the flag and Daniel Ullyett third. Stoute won race two, Thompson getting the better of a good battle with Ullyett for second place, while Thompson beat Stoute and Ullyett in race three. In the day’s final encounter, Thompson crossed the line first, but was penalised 10 seconds for avoidable contact, handing Ullyett the win, with Donche Blackman third. With 334 points, Thompson carries an 18-point advantage over Ullyett into round five on September 17, with Stoute third another 10 points behnd.

Mark Thompson and Cody Mark won two races each 125cc Masters, Thompson still leading the standings from Mark, with Maurice Fortier third; although not scoring points, Colin Clarke finished all four races in his Shifter Karts.
