Zak Mayers the new leader of BKA Championship

Zak Mayers stormed to four race wins in the Easykart 100cc Juniors class at Sunday’s (March 3) Williams Equipment Raceday to take the lead in the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship. With early leader Calem Maloney absent pursuing his studies, Kayleigh Catwell has moved ahead in the 125cc Lights after four hard-fought races and is tied for second overall with 60cc Cadets leader Oliver Judd.

Last year’s Junior and Overall Champion Daniel Ullyett moved up a class on Sunday, leaving just three Juniors - Mayers, his cousin Jacob and Aeden Bruce – meaning reduced points for a win, 21 instead of 25. Bruce qualified fastest, but Zak led race one from flag to flag while the other two scrapped over second, Bruce earning a 10secs penalty for a bumper infraction, the first of half-a-dozen drivers to do so on the day.

Three more race wins followed for Zak Mayers, although not without strong challenges from both the others. Now with 163 points, class-leader Mayers also clocked the fastest lap (45.955), the others within two-tenths; Bruce is second (139pts) and Jacob Mayers third (129pts) in the Junior standings.

As predicted, the 11-strong 125cc Lights class provided some stirring action, with two different race-winners and four more finding the podium. Last year’s class runner-up Colin Bradshaw returned to the fray, qualifying fastest and winning three races flag-to-flag. Raizer Stoute won race two on the road, but picked up a penalty, handing victory to Cody Mark, who crossed the line side-by-side with Bradshaw and Kayleigh Catwell, the trio covered by less than one hundredth of a second in an epic close finish.

With two second and two fourth places, Catwell now has 144 points, moving ahead in the class standings. Aaron Blackett is second (117pts), one podium finish his best of four top five placings, with Sebastian Thompson third (109pts) after suffering bumper penalties in all four races. Ullyett showed well on his move to the 125cc class: he qualified second, two-tenths shy of Bradshaw, finished second three times and fourth once, emerging the second highest points-scorer for the day.

Once again, there were only two drivers in the 60cc Cadets, Judd qualifying faster and winning all four races, to increase his lead over Shamir Eversley to 16 points.
