Maloney passes Bruce for BKA Sectus Technologies Championship lead

With a perfect record of four wins, reigning Champion Driver Calem Maloney has assumed the lead of the Sectus Technologies Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Championship from Aeden Bruce, who had led after the UpBeat Wholesale-sponsored opening round in March. Having finished ahead on points of cousins Zak and Jacob Mayers in the hard-fought 60cc Cadet class last time out, Bruce had to give best last Sunday (May 7) in round two, sponsored by Williams Equipment.

Fastest in Qualifying in 125cc Lights, which continues to be the best-subscribed class, Maloney claimed a dominant flag-to-flag win in the day’s first race, with Colin Bradshaw and Sebastian Thompson completing the podium. He had to work harder for his other three wins, not making his way to the front until lap 4 in race 2, while Thompson also briefly led race 3. Bradshaw consolidated second in the standings, with three more second-place finishes, but Thompson’s perfect podium record for the day was ruined by Aaron Blackett, who passed him four laps from home.

While 2022 Rookie of the Year Jacob Mayers topped Qualifying in the Cadet class, it was Zak who passed early leader and reigning Cadet Champion Bruce to win race one; the cousins swapped the lead back and forth in race two, Zak again the winner before going on to a flag-to-flag victory in race three. The lead changed no fewer than four times in the final encounter, with Jacob finally grabbing the win, although Zak copped the day’s fastest lap. Now, there are just 11 points spread across the Mayers boys and Bruce, with a cracking battle in prospect season-long.

Cody Mark and Blake Thompson were top scorers respectively in 125cc Masters and 125cc Lights, each extending his points lead. Between just two Masters, Mark beat Mark Thompson to the flag in three of the four races, Thompson winning the last. Meanwhile, it was really close-fought stuff in 100cc Lights, Blake Thompson winning three, the third by just 14/100ths of a second from Raizer Stoute, who had won the first race of the day. Champion Driver in 2020, Daniel Ullyett, had two second and two third places.
